Wednesday, December 22nd - 10 in ’10: Books

To wrap up the year, I wanted to look through my photos and compile a few lists of the things I enjoy shooting. I will be posting the top 10 photos across 10 categories to close out 2010. These 10 categories will be: Books, Film, Portraits, Projects, Sports, Weddings, Cityscapes, Travel, Videos and Live Music. Last year, I made similar lists, and you can see my 9 in ’09 here.

I don’t read too much or too good, which is probably why a guide book is in my top 10 list of books I’ve read this year. But seriously, the ‘Revealed’ guide books by Andrew Doughty are humorous, insightful and absolutely spot on with information only locals know – easily the best guidebook I’ve ever read – and I found myself reading it from cover to cover. This little thing made our trip to Kauai a lot better than Fodor’s or Frommer’s ever could have.

That said, I did read some ‘real’ books this year. Not all of these books came out this year, but at least I finally got around to reading them. I was hooked on the Trilogy series from Stieg Larsson (as was the rest of the world), and my favorite author (Bret Easton Ellis) released a new book too. Overall, this list of books doesn’t include too many feel-good stories, but that’s fine by me. I tend to like darker, suspenseful mysteries or fiction based on real historical events – particularly WW I & II and Vietnam. One book that fused together a lot of topics I truly enjoy was DelCorso’s Gallery – a great book about a Vietnam War photographer. For some reason, I’ve always enjoyed reading about Vietnam and Philip Caputo is always right up there with some of the best authors on this subject. I really hope that another one of my favorite authors, Tim O’Brien, releases a new book sometime soon – fingers crossed for 2011.

When I’d finish reading, I usually took a quick photo of each book – more for me to remember which books I had actually read (and then I found that Goodreads is much easier – check out my profile). That said, it’s pretty hard to take interesting photos of books. If you’re looking for cool photos, hopefully I will have some for you later in the week. In the meantime, as you’re stuck in the airport waiting for your plane to de-ice or the next big snow storm to roll in, buy one of these books at your closest Hudson News and enjoy the holidays.
